The semaphorins are a large family of secreted and membrane-associated proteins, many of
which appear to affect axon steering, fasciculation, branching, and synapse formation
through their action as inhibitors or chemorepellents. Recent studies indicate that
semaphorins may also influence axon guidance decisions by functioning as attractants.
