In this issue of Nature Medicine, reports by Pakker et al.(pp. 208-214) and Gorochov et
al.(pp. 215-221) provide the final nails in the coffin for models of T-cell dynamics in which a
major reason for changes in T-cell numbers is the death of HIV-infected cells. The papers
present extensive data on the remodelling of the T-cell compartment in HIV-infected
individuals after treatment with Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART, a combination
of 3 antiviral drugs including at least one protease inhibitor).
