Abstract
The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a small, positive stranded RNA virus that causes an inflammatory disease of the liver. Parenteral transmission is common; however, because de novo hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is usually clinically inapparent, in almost 40% of the patients neither the time of onset nor the route of infection are known. Although the immune response probably contributes to viral clearance in a minority of patients, the factors and mechanisms that allow the virus to circumvent the host’s immune response and to persist in most patients are not completely understood.
